{"id":2,"date":"2013-11-27T16:05:04","date_gmt":"2013-11-27T16:05:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/evst399.coolsociology.net\/?page_id=2"},"modified":"2018-09-11T09:23:43","modified_gmt":"2018-09-11T09:23:43","slug":"sample-page","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/evst399.mcguire-spickard.com\/","title":{"rendered":"Welcome to Research Methods and Design"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Research is a complicated enterprise, but not as complicated as many think. \u00a0Designing research projects can be broken down into <a title=\"6 Design Tasks\" href=\"http:\/\/evst399.coolsociology.net\/?page_id=52\"><strong>6 key steps<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 Each of these involves several decisions, both practical and theoretical.\u00a0 This course covers the basics, at a level suitable for undergraduate majors in environmental studies, sociology, and anthropology.\u00a0 From the rudiments of epistemology to the practice of research design, it introduces the choices you have to make, as you seek to learn systematically about our world.<\/p>\n<p>We will consider the following topics, among others:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the difference between a <strong>research topic<\/strong>\u00a0and a <strong>research question<\/strong>, and how to develop your topic into a good question (step 1);<\/li>\n<li>how to choose a logical structure for your research (step 2);<\/li>\n<li>the relationship between <strong>research questions <\/strong>and the <strong>types of data<\/strong>\u00a0that can answer them (step 3);<\/li>\n<li>the kinds of <strong>data-gathering\u00a0<\/strong><strong>methods<\/strong>\u00a0suitable for capturing particular <strong>types of data<\/strong> (step 4);<\/li>\n<li>the proper choice of <strong>research sites or samples<\/strong>\u00a0for answering your research question (step 5);<\/li>\n<li>ways to <strong>analyze the data<\/strong>\u00a0that these methods produce (step 6).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"6 Design Tasks\" href=\"http:\/\/evst399.coolsociology.net\/?page_id=52\"><em>Click HERE to learn more about the six decisions<br \/>\nyou have to make when designing\u00a0research.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We will spend the first few weeks of the semester focusing on research design principles.\u00a0 We will spend the central part of the semester exploring various data-gathering methods and learning to analyze the data that results. \u00a0We will become familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of these various methods. \u00a0Each student will then prepare a formal research proposal, outlining a research project of her or his choice.\u00a0 After critique, students will revise these proposals for public presentation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Class meets MW from 9:30-10:50am in Larsen Hall 224.<\/li>\n<li>Final project presentations will be our regular classroom, during the regularly scheduled final exam period.\u00a0\u00a0<em>(You are welcome to invite friends to see your presentation.)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">By the end of the course, students should know a good deal more about research than they do at the beginning.\u00a0 They will also learn a good deal more about scholarship!<\/p>\n<p><strong>This course fulfills the University of Redlands WB requirement for Junior\/Senior level writing (LAF) and the SS*, IMLA*, and WD* requirements of the new Liberal Arts Inquiry (LAI).<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">*SS = Social Scientific Practice;
