{"id":154,"date":"2013-11-30T01:02:21","date_gmt":"2013-11-30T01:02:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/evst399.coolsociology.net\/?page_id=154"},"modified":"2018-09-11T09:42:21","modified_gmt":"2018-09-11T09:42:21","slug":"research-design-project","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/evst399.mcguire-spickard.com\/?page_id=154","title":{"rendered":"Research Design project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This project is the core of this course.\u00a0 By semester\u2019s end, you should have a workable research design, which you can use for a senior capstone, and honors project, or a (future) master\u2019s degree.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Project Overview:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Choose a <strong>research topic<\/strong> that interests you enough to spend a lot of time with it this term;<\/li>\n<li>Identify a suitable\u00a0<strong>research question <\/strong>&#8212; one that has enough specificity to make your research possible;<\/li>\n<li>Identify the <strong>type of data<\/strong> that you need to answer this question;<\/li>\n<li>Choose an appropriate <strong>data-gathering method<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>Pick a\u00a0<strong>site<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>sample<\/strong>\u00a0from which to gather data.<\/li>\n<li>Choose an appropriate <strong>method of data analysis<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Your project \u00a0will be to describe this project in enough detail that non-social scientists can understand what you are proposing to do.\u00a0 Besides the items above, you will identify:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>potential sources of data and how you will collect data from them;<\/li>\n<li>how you will conduct your research ethically; and<\/li>\n<li>what problems might arise during your research and how you will address them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nSteps<\/strong>:\u00a0<em>(due dates for each of these steps are listed on the <strong><a title=\"Schedule\" href=\"http:\/\/evst399.coolsociology.net\/?page_id=23\">Course Schedule<\/a>. \u00a0<\/strong>Most elements of the assignment will be turned in at the course\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/learn.redlands.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moodle site<\/a><\/strong>, in the Homework Dropbox folder.)<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Three Topic Ideas:<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Identify three possible research topics that you would find interesting<\/li>\n<li>Outline each \u00a0in about a page of text <em>\u00a0(250 words each; 750 words in all)<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Turn this in on <a href=\"http:\/\/learn.redlands.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moodle<\/a>\u00a0before 8:00am<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Over the following couple of weeks, you will then negotiate with us to choose a project that is appropriate for senior-level undergraduate research.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Final Choice of Topic and Research Question:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure that the research question meets the criteria for a good research question, as described in Chapter 1 of the <u>Research Basics<\/u>\u00a0text.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Turn this in on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/learn.redlands.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moodle<\/a>\u00a0before 8:00am.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Concept Paper:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>A preliminary outline of your chosen project. <em>\u00a0(About 500 words: 2 typed pages).<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Turn this in on <a href=\"http:\/\/learn.redlands.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moodle<\/a>\u00a0before 8:00am<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Extended Design Outline:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>A thorough and detailed outline of your chosen project. \u00a0(About 1000-1250 words: 4-5 typed pages.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Turn this in on <a href=\"http:\/\/learn.redlands.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moodle<\/a>\u00a0before 8:00am<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Proposal Draft:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">This draft should be as complete as you can make it, and of the quality that you typically turn in as a final project for other classes.\u00a0 Both we and a<\/span>\u00a0student partner will read it, giving you feedback. \u00a0<em>(<\/em><em><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Expect this to be about 10 pages long: 2500 words.)<\/span><\/em>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Turn this in on <a href=\"http:\/\/learn.redlands.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moodle<\/a>\u00a0before 8:00am<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Bring a printed copy to give to another student for comments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Your Comments on Another Student\u2019s Draft<\/span><i>\u00a0\u00a0<\/i><\/strong><em style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">(2-3 pages; 500-750 words)<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Turn this in on <a href=\"http:\/\/learn.redlands.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moodle<\/a>\u00a0before 8:00am<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Bring a printed copy for the student whose draft you read.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Final Proposal:<\/strong> <em>(oral &amp;
